New casino boat group hopes to open on Talahi Island by May

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

It's been a few years,  but it looks like the casino cruise idea is making a return. A Florida group wants to bring a brand new gambling boat operation to Savannah. The idea is already getting mixed response on Facebook.

It's been a few years since the now infamous Diamond Casino docked at on the Bull River on Talahi island. Now, it seems another casino boat is going to try and give it a shot. Tradewinds Casino Cruise Lines out of Florida is trying to clear some legal hurdles to make it happen.

The general manager of Tradewinds, Roger Humphries, was onsite today and told WTOC in person they are still working with Chatham County on a business license so they can open and operate. The tentative plan is to be able to open by May 15th.

Right now, they are allowed to post "coming soon" signs at designated times.

Humphries also made it very clear they are in no way associated with the group who operated on this dock before them, the Diamond Casino group which was raided by the feds a few years ago,  with the general manager and two captains eventually indicted on illegal gambling charges. The Diamond Casino has been gone since mid 2012, leaving the dock empty...until now.

The Tradewinds Casino Cruise has been working on cleaning up the location and getting their name out into the Savannah market and surrounding communities. Humphries says they have run a successful casino boat business in Florida following all laws and regulations and plan on doing the same in Savannah once they get the proper permission.

Abshire Public Relations is handling the pending arrival of Tradewinds Casino Cruise lines. They tell us the Casino Cruise boat is in Charleston being refurbished. Interestingly enough, the old Diamond Casino boat is also in Charleston...being auctioned off.
