Child charged in shooting death to stay in detention center until next hearing

A 12-year-old boy was back in Chatham Co. Juvenile Court Tuesday to continue a probable cause hearing in the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy on April 4.

The judge has decided to keep the 12-year-old boy at the Regional Youth Detention Center until his next hearing on April 21.

According to police around 9 pm friday night, the young boys were playing with a gun at a home on Church Street. Police say at some point the gun went off hitting 11 year old Montrez Burroughs in the chest.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was intentional. They consulted the DA's office and charged the 12 year old with involuntary manslaughter that night, and at this point police are still trying to figure out how the boys got a hold of that gun.

The child's next hearing will be an adjudication hearing where he will enter a plea. If he pleads not guilty, he will have a bench trial in juvenile court because they do not have jury trials in juvenile court.
