Beaufort to hold public hearing on marina rezoning

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The city of Beaufort will be holding a public hearing Tuesday night about rezoning the marina parking lot.

It's all part of the city's civic master plan, but the idea is drawing some opposition from local groups.

The four and a half acre parking lot holds a lot of meaning to the citizens of Beaufort. Currently, it is zoned as preservation/historic, and some people are worried the city is moving too fast with its project.

Tuesday night's public hearing is to consider rezoning that part of the waterfront park into core commercial space, which would make it consistent with the rest of Bay Street.

So far there are no definitive plans onw what would replace the lot or how it would be financed, although the general idea is to create a mixed use property consisting of retail, hospitality and office space.

That has some groups, like the Beaufort-Port Royal Metropolitan Planning Commission and Historic Beaufort Foundation, worried.

They're opposed to rezoning the property until more information is given.

"The property belongs to the citizens of Beaufort, and there's been no discussions by the citizens of Beaufort about whether or not they want to turn that public property over to a private developer," said Historic Beaufort Foundation Executive Director Maxine Lutz.

Tuesday night's public hearing starts at 7 p.m.  inside City Hall.
