Dozens oppose rezoning of marina parking lot at public hearing

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

Dozens of people filled Beaufort City Hall for Tuesday night's public hearing about the rezoning of the marina parking lot.

For two hours, City Council members listened as people spoke out against the idea, saying it makes no sense to rezone it to "core commercial" property when they don't know exactly what they will build there yet.

By rezoning it, city leaders say it will be consistent with the rest of downtown Beaufort and the city's Civic Master Plan.

But, folks are worried that the four and a half acres of open land space is too priceless to lose.

"People come from all over the United States to see a historic, quaint, Southern town, they don't come here for boutique hotels or flats, they come down to see the quaint Beaufort that they have read about. Charleston has done a good job of preserving their waterfront, and I just hope we will be able to do the same thing," said Beaufort County resident, Dr. Bill Sammons.

The city will not take any action on the marina project until the parking issue is resolved first. The next step is for the council to consider whether to have a first reading on the rezoning request.
