Second Harvest receives $50,000 donation, new freezer

It's been a good couple of days for Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia Food Bank.

First DOT Foods Vidalia presented the food bank with a $50,000 check, and now their brand new freezer is complete.

The freezer was destroyed last September after the ceiling collapsed. The freezer is a vital part of their opertaion, so when it was ruined, they knew they'd have to find a way to rebuild it.

It cost more than a half million dollars to do it, and their insurance only paid for $100,000.

"The community has really stepped up and helped us raise the money to be able to pay for it," said Mary Jane Crouch, the director of Second Harvest. "We've raised all the money to help pay for the freezer."

Crouch said the completion of the new freezer came just in time for their summer rush. She said they're going to be providing food for more than 70 food banks in the area.

The new freezer also comes with new safety features.

"They're really going to be critical in making sure our staff is safe and making sure that things go well," said Crouch.

One of the new features is the foyer. The temperature in there is higher than the freezer, so the ice doesn't freeze.

"So the forklift goes in there and then shuts the door and moves into the freezer, and it keeps you from having ice build up where people can slip an fall," she said.
