SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The American Red Cross of Southeast Georgia hosted its second annual Youth Heroes Awards Breakfast on Friday.

Fifteen middle and high school students from Savannah and the surrounding cities of Hinesville, Brunswick, Pooler and Thunderbolt were recognized for extending their hearts and hands in volunteer work.

"The children volunteer in many different areas," said Esther Sheppard of the Southeast Georgia chapter of the American Red Cross. "They have their own nonprofits. They fundraise for St. Jude's Research Hospitals, as well as Jack and Jill, Boys and Girls Club and other various nonprofits."

"It shocked me to get honored," said Jermaya Patterson. "I was just like a volunteer. Everyone should volunteer. That's what you should do. You should just pay back."

The Red Cross also honored Cathy Mill, Vice President of Georgia Power, for her lifelong volunteer and youth mentor achievements.
WTOC's News Director, Jan Smith, who is a board member for the Savannah chapter of the Red Cross, helped with the awards, and Sonny Dixon served as the event's emcee.
