BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

For the first time ever, Beaufort County now how its own coroner's office.

It has been four years in the making for coroner Ed Allen and the public got a chance to tour the new facility on Monday morning.

Until now, staff had to rely on services from MUSC, Hilton head Island and Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The new 6,400 square foot coroner's office comes with its own morgue for onsite medical autopsies.

"It's a dream come true, not only for me but for my entire staff," said Allen. "Of all the buildings we looked at, it was going to be $550,000 and then we were going to have to do renovations to it, we were able to renovate and equip the building, it was property the county already owned."

The building previously housed the county's Disabilities and Special Needs Dept.

The renovations cost $850,000.
