Tybee City Council to talk pay raise for city manager

Posted: Updated:
TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

The city manager of Tybee Island is now one of only two finalists for the top job at St. Mary's, GA after a candidate dropped out late Tuesday afternoon.

This has forced Tybee Island Council to hold a special meeting on Wednesday night.

It looks like the city is trying to make some changes to the budget in an effort to keep their city manager, as the topic of the special meeting is pay compensation for the position.

Mayor Jason Buelterman said the city manager has not received a pay raise in the last several years.

Despite some controversy among council members and the city manager, some who have tried to repeadetly to terminate her unsuccessfully, Buelterman said he thinks the pay issue may help keep Diane Schleicher from taking the job in the larger city of St. Mary's if she is chosen.

Schleicher has her final interview on Thursday.

"I think we've had a city manager on Tybee the longest we've had a city manager," said Buelterman. "I feel like she's done a good job. She is being sought after by another community and I'd like to do what we can to keep her."

Some residents that spoke off camera seemed more mixed.

Some said Schleicher has done a good job and they hate to see turnover, while another said council members tried to fire her three times already, why try to keep her and giver her a raise.

The city council is holding a special meeting at 8:30 p.m. to discuss the city manager position and its compensation.
