Tybee prepares for last weekend of Orange Crush

Posted: Updated:

Tybee Island is preparing for another busy weekend as Orange Crush came and went with a whimper last weekend, but this weekend is expected to be a different story.

The city treated the first weekend as a practice run. All they steps they plan for April 18-20 were put into place already without any issues.

Tybee officials said they saw a slight increase in traffic, both coming on and off the island Friday through Sunday. Police increased their presence and held safety checkes, but it was, for many, just an average day at the beach.
Officials said they will also block off one lane of Highway 80 during Easter Weekend to guarantee quick access for public safety vehicles if required.

Officials are asking people to avoid the roads on Saturday to help relieve some of the stress on public safety and cleanup during those times.

Churches will be out in full force for Orange Crush as well.

"I think anything that will have a positive impact on this weekend is a good thing and make sure people have a safe and fun time," said Loukia Tsiaras of Christy's Department Store. "Like any busy weekend, we will probably close early to beat the traffic off the island. It can take hours sometimes.

Christy's Department Store is right in the heart of Orange Crush at the pier, but this year Tybee Island will close the pier at 6:30 p.m. Bathrooms will also be closed on the pier, so the only public restrooms will be the Marine Science center and the Port-a-Potties.
