Rape Crisis Center hosts take back the night event

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Rape Crisis Center hosted Take Back the Night in Forsyth Park.

The evening was filled with singing, dancing, poetry, and a special "Walk A Mile In Her Shoes" activity, where men walk a mile around Forsyth Park in high-heel shoes, to symbolize the steps victims take toward healing. The purpose of the event is to establish a unified front against sexual violence.

"Sometimes we become desensitized to it. It happens every day but that isn't a good reason to ignore it. So tonight is to bring awareness, to bring light to it, and to have everyone go out and fight for a great cause like this one," said Kwame Phillips, event coordinator.

Statistics show one in three women will be violated by someone that they know, and fifty percent of those women do not share that with anyone.
