With a new $10,000 plus raise voted on Wednesday night by Tybee City Council, Tybee's City Manager withdrew as a finalist for the top job in St. Mary's, GA on Thursday morning.

Tybee Mayor Jason Buelterman hoped a raise would keep the city manager where she is, and it looked like it worked.

St. Mary's City Human Resources Dept. received an email early Thursday morning from Diane Schleicher telling them she was officially removing her name from consideration, the same morning she was scheduled to be in St. Mary's for final interviews with their mayor and city council.

In the email, Schleicher stated to Human Resources Director Donna Folsom, "St. Mary's offers new challenges and opportunities, but I need to complete some important projects on Tybee at this time."

St. Mary's also offered a salary of between $100,000 and $140,000, but Wednesday night in a special meeting, in an attempt to keep Schleicher, Tybee City Council voted 5-2 in favor of paying her an additional $2,700 the next two months for back pay on raises she has not received.

Starting in July, her base salary will jump to $102,000.

While the mayor and others did not want to lose Schleicher, and avoid turnover, council member Barry Brown opposed the raise and called the timing questionable.

"I think she played Tybee right there," said Brown. "I think she played the mayor. Personally, I think some of the members of the council may be too close to the subject matter here. When you start bringing in personal friendships into business, you always end up with some kind of problem."

Mayor Buelterman said on Wednesday night that Schleicher deserved a raise after several years without one.

A call to Schleicher has not been returned for comment.
