EASLEY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A woman was accidentally shot and killed by a child in Easley on Thursday afternoon, Maj. Tim Tollison confirmed to FOX Carolina.

Tollison said the victim, 22-year-old Alexandra Anita Santos, was in the passenger seat of a car on Hasting Road when she was shot.

The gunshot came from behind her and went through the seat, according to Tollison.

Tollison said Santos was accidentally shot by a 6-year-old child, who found the gun on the floorboard of the backseat.

The woman was brought to the Baptist Medical Center in Easley where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Coroner Kandy Kelly said Santos died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

FOX Carolina spoke exclusively to the family of Santos. Her mother, Cynthia Yergeau, said the woman who was with Santos called her to tell her the dreaded news. Yergeau said the woman told her, though, that Santos' ex-boyfriend was responsible for her death.

"You give any kind of access to a firearm six-year-old child, somebody needs to be responsible," said Yergeau. "Take responsibility, own up to what your kids did," she said.

Yergeau said she is "angry" such an accusation was leveled against that ex-boyfriend.

Tollison said the investigation is ongoing.

The family is asking for donations for funeral expenses . Collection boxes will be placed at the Cremation Society of South Carolina at 6010 White Horse Road or 328 Dupont Drive in Greenville on April 24, 2014 from 5-7 p.m.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving.
