Major renovations coming to the Harbour Town Golf Links

Posted: Updated:

The 46th annual RBC Heritage presented by Boeing finished up day one of play on Thursday, but as soon as Monday comes and the tournament is over, crews will be gutting the Harbour Town Golf Links clubhouse, preparing for a demolition.

The clubhouse is the hub during the Heritage, where the players' locker rooms, meeting rooms, and the pro shop are.

They're tearing the building down, but they're going to rebuild it, making it bigger and better.

It is just one of the many renovation projects going on here inside the Sea Pines Resort, and all over Hilton Head Island.

Hilton Head Island is receiving a facelift with the addition of many new project, including the new Shelter Cove Mall, renovations at the Westin, Sea Pines and dredging in Harbour Town, as well as the additions of the new Beach Club and Plantation Golf Club.

"This is a pretty exciting time," said Sea Pines golf pro John Farrell. "There's a whole sense of renewal. I mean, there's a lot of great things going on at different properties."

Come Monday construction crews will gut the 20,000 square foot clubhouse, then a week later, tear the building down. Crews will then start building the brand new 26,000 square foot Harbour Town Golf Links clubhouse.

"As charming as that building has been, it's really a tired building at this point, and it's time for something fresh and new," said Farrell.

The new building will have a living room lounge, a 2,000 square foot indoor and outdoor restaurant and bar, a 1,900 square foot signature pro shop, a brand new banquet room, and for the golfers during the Heritage, a 4,000 square foot locker room.

"This is a special time in Sea Pines history," said Farrell.

Heritage guests were shocked to find out about the clubhouse renovations.

"Surprised, because the one they have is beautiful," said guest Bernadette Doupona. "But I guess with all things, you gotta keep going, move on."

"Change comes along on a regular basis, and maybe this change is overdue," said Leo Galanti.

The clubhouse is supposed to be leveled sometime in the coming weeks, and Farrell said it will be completed just in time for the 2015 RBC Heritage.
