Suspected child molester pleads guilty, sentenced to 20 years

A suspected child molester was sentenced on Friday for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

The case gained a lot of attention in August of 2013 when a search ensued on Wilmington Island for James Dover.

In court on Friday, Dover's attorney told the judge the 13-year-old victim had consensual sex with Dover and wanted to get pregnant.

Dover was arrested on Wilmington Island after a manhunt in August of 2013. Police shut down three schools and a condominium complex when someone recognized him after seeing a mug shot.

Police caught him and arrested him later that day.

The prosecution stated in court on Friday that in late 2012, Dover was released from prison and he began chatting with a 13-year-old girl on a dating website.

The girl's profile stated she was 19, according to attorneys. The investigation revealed Dover took the girl to the Super 8 Hotel in Port Wentworth to have sex with her on several occasions.

According to the prosecution, several months later the victim's mother kicked or punched her in the stomach and the girl was sent to the hospital. That is when the details of the encounters were revealed.

"Home life not ideal," said an attorney for the prosecution. "They decided to engage in sexual acts to get her pregnant. She thought if she got pregnant she would not have to live in her mother's home."

Dover was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 10 years to serve for several charges, including sexual battery with a minor.

The victim is now at a foster home.
