Community gathers for Double Churches Middle School principal's final goodbye

MIDLAND, GA (WTVM) -

His fist bumps in the hallways and being their favorite are the things many at the funeral say they'll remember about former Double Churches Middle School principal Chris Cox. They say Muscogee County has lost a loving father, husband, educator and friend.

Double Churches Middle School student, Nina Churchwell, says "he was my favorite principal."

Theresa Ricks, a former co-worker of Mr. Cox's adds, "still my favorite principal and I love you."

For more than two decades, Chris Cox unselfishly gave himself to the Muscogee County School District. First serving as a teacher at Rothschild Middle School, then moving up the ranks to assistant principal and on to principal at Double Churches Middle School; leaving his mark on all he came in contact with.

"He was just so funny and made jokes everywhere. And he would always fist bump us in the hallway to class," Churchwell remembers.

It's a sense of humor that childhood friend, Paul Lee, says Cox carried with him for as long as they've been friends.

Cox explains, "Chris and I go back to the fall of 1970 when we started 7th grade at Arnold Junior High."

Lee recalls Cox as the one friends looked to for comic relief in tough situations. And students remember him as a source of comfort.

Churchwell goes on to say "I was much more comfortable and not so scared in the hallways when I saw him."

Cox's comic relief was no match for his battle with cancer that took him over on Wednesday night. His passing bringing together those he taught and loved for his final goodbye.

Lee says, "to hear him talk the past few years about the kids that he mentored and the kids he taught and the kids he was around, he's left an indelible stamp on a lot of the youth of Columbus. And now the youth of Columbus and their families."

Principal Cox leaves behind a wife, two children and schools full of adoring students and faculty who cherish the memory of his life of service to the Muscogee County School District.
