SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are looking for anyone who may have seen and have information about what happened early Monday morning after a woman was hit by a car and later died.

It happened at about midnight at the intersection of Gaston Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, right by the entrance to the Wendy's restaurant.

Police say a driver noticed a woman laying in the middle of MLK when he flagged down a Metro officer. Police investigated and noticed the woman had been hit by a car.

"A little after midnight, one of our officers was advised by a passerby that a woman was laying in the street. He investigated and found that she had been hit by a car. She was transported to Memorial where she expired. The investigation is underway. We don't have witnesses at this point. So we're looking for anyone who saw anything or may have seen anything to give CrimeStoppers a call to see if you can't help us determine who might have been involved in this accident," said SCMPD's Julian Miller.

MLK Blvd was closed for a little more than an hour when it reopened to traffic shortly after 1:30 a.m.

If you know anything regarding the fatal hit-and-run, call Savannah-Chatham Metro Police or Crimestoppers at 912.234.2020.
