HHI Airport runway expansion would not have negative environmental impact

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

For years people who live near the Hilton Head Island Airport have opposed the idea of extending the runway because of noise, air quality and wildlife endangerment.

A new report conducted by Beaufort County's engineering consultant found the project would not have any environmental impact and the FAA agrees.

"Ultimately, by the county expanding the runway, that will bring in more planes, private planes, people who are flying down to Hilton head, spending the weekend here," said Beaufort County spokesperson Joy Nelson. "Therefore, they're putting money into the local economy, so this is a huge economic impact project that will benefit Beaufort County as a whole."

The plan is to extend the airport runway another 700 feet, making it 5,000 feet long.

The public has until May 5 to comment on the report.
