Charleston carriage incident eerily similar to Savannah's

More than a week after a spooked carriage horse caused havoc on the streets of Savannah, an eerily similar situation took place in Charleston on Tuesday afternoon.

Three tourists were onboard in Charleston when the horse and carriage ran off.

When people were shown the video of the Charleston incident, their reactions were almost identical to people who saw or heard about what happened in Savannah.

The Savannah incident all started when the horse lost its bit and the carriage operator lost control of the spooked animal. It ran down Congress Street, eventually injuring the driver.

Five tourists were onboard, but they were able to escape without serious injuries.

In Charleston, the blinders on the horse fell off and spooked the horse. The horse ran off, nearly running into another horse and carriage.

"That's crazy," said Joseph Barnwell. "I am glad nobody was injured, and I'm glad a whole lot of people weren't on it so people didn't get hurt.

"Horses get spooked," said Shane and Debbie Steele, a couple visiting from Wisconsin. "It happens. It's part of life. I think he did a good job, the guy backing up."

No one was seriously hurt, but the tourists did suffer some scrapes. The horse is ok and the carriage was banged up.

Here in Savannah, City Council members said they plan to bring up horse carriage safety at their next workshop.
