High 5 4 Kids: Carlye Robertson

THOMSON, GA (WFXG) -

Welcome to the Land of Oz, or the closest thing to it in McDuffie County at Thomson High School's production of The Wizard of Oz.

And meet the girl playing Dorothy: Carlye Robertson. Her latest star turn almost didn't happen.

"When I was 12, in sixth grade, I fell and broke my hip," Robertson said. "It was a freak accident."

She was able to recover after intense physical therapy, but then, the unthinkable happened on the very stage she'll be performing on this year.

"During a production of Peter Pan, I fell and broke my fibula," Robertson said. "I have a little scar over there."

After two devastating injuries, doctors decided to perform a radical surgery.

"17 years old and a total hip replacement," Robertson said. "Just a lot of recovery."

She said that during her recovery process, she thought she may never perform again.

"It crossed my mind a lot," she said. "Once you find where you're comfortable at, like I felt comfortable with music, I played guitar, piano and sang. I felt comfortable in that. And I thought what if I can never do this again. And it was really, really bad."

But with the help of her team of doctors and therapists, her dreams are continuing to become reality.

"It feels normal," she said. "I can dance. I can skip down the yellow brick road. It's fine."
