2 house fires in Effingham Co. called suspicious

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A state fire investigator is trying to determine the exact cause of two overnight fires in Effingham County, both are being called suspicious.

"The first question people usually ask after a fire 'Is everyone OK?' Luckily, in the two cases here in Effingham County that wasn't the case. Now, all the attention is focused on what started them," said Lt. Bryce Nyberg.

Both of the homes are vacant.

"We are concerned with it, but we won't make any judgment until the state fire investigator gives us something," Nyberg said.

Effingham County deputies said they feel confident the fire on Hodgeville Road was the work of an arsonist.

It started late Wednesday night and crews were out all Thursday morning monitoring what was left.

Another fire broke out early Thursday morning at a mobile home in Clyo and was a total loss.

Deputies said they're making some good progress on the investigation, but warn this can be very dangerous.

"Just because a home is vacant and you go set that thing on fire, just know there could always be someone in there," said Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor.

If anyone knows anything about the fires or saw anything suspicious, call the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.
