Deal names panel to aid struggling rural hospitals

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal says he's moving quickly to help rural hospitals that are struggling to keep their doors open.
Speaking to a group of hospital administrators in Savannah on Friday, Deal announced 15 doctors, health care managers, lawmakers and local officials he's appointed to a new committee. The panel is supposed to help rural hospitals deal with high-cost issues, like treating many uninsured patients.
The governor also says the state Department of Community Health board will vote next Tuesday on policy changes that would allow rural hospitals to save money by downsizing - and in some cases operate solely as emergency rooms.
Deal says shrinking services at rural hospitals will mean some communities lose jobs, but he says it's better than having hospitals close altogether.
