FORT STEWART (WTOC) -

Liberty County and Fort Stewart hosted the Spring Special Olympics on Friday. The annual collaboration gives special needs children the opportunity to participate in track-and-field and other sports.

"I just like being with my family and having fun with my friends and classmates," said athlete Michelle Lugo.

"If you remember back when you were young and the thrill of competition, the anxiousness, the adrenaline you got, it's no different, they want to compete and they want to win," said Exceptional Family Member Program member Victor Garcia.

Liberty County School System Superintendent Dr. Valya Lee and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield Garrison Commander Col. Kevin Gregory spoke during the opening ceremony.
