Should teachers be able to carry firearms in school?

Posted: Updated:

School districts across Georgia are trying to decide what to do now that Gov. Nathan Deal has signed a law that would allow school teachers and faculty to carry firearms with the school board's permission.

Chatham County Schools already have certified trained and armed police officers.

Would they allow teachers to be armed, too?

"No, we do not have plans for any sort of policy recommendation that would allow for certain employees to be armed in our schools," said Savannah-Chatham County Public School Systems spokesman Kurt Hetager. "That's just not going to happen."

The law also allows guns in bars and some government buildings. Church leaders are able to decide if guns will be allowed in their places of worship.
