TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

Seventy-five students from Hancock Day School spent National Arbor Day landscaping and learning from the Savannah Tree Foundation, who said they were delighted to team up with the students for their service project.

They said they hope to have 75 future tree huggers.

"We've taught them how to properly mulch a tree, the benefits mulch gives to those trees, about properly caring for and pruning trees and importance of trees in our ecosystems," said Savannah Tree Foundation Director Karen Jenkins. "We've just mulched 50 live oak trees in 2003 by the Savannah Tree Foundation here at the Tybee Lighthouse."

While Georgia celebrates Arbor Day the third Friday of February, and South Carolina celebrates the first Friday in December, National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April.
