Head-on crash on US Hwy 80, 2 hospitalized

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police are investigating an early-morning head-on collision of two cars that sent two people to a hospital and closed East U.S. Highway 80 for almost three hours on Saturday.

Matthew Potter, 31, of an Oemler Court West address, was extricated from the wreckage of the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving by Southside Fire and Tybee Island Fire departments and transported to Memorial University Medical Center with serious injuries after the 4:10 a.m. crash.

Potter is listed in stable condition at Memorial Medical University Medical Center on Saturday afternoon.

A male passenger in the Jetta was also transported with complaints of injury. 

Allen James Burnett, 25, of a South Millwood Road address, escaped injury when the Dodge Charger he was driving collided with the Volkswagen just east of the Bull River Bridge on East U.S. Highway 80.

Traffic on the highway was shut down by SCMPD and Tybee Island police until about 7:15 a.m.

The Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) continues to investigate.
