An early morning fire destroyed a family's home in Allenhurst on Saturday.

Walthourville Fire Department and Liberty County Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire around 4:30 a.m. at 565 Dunlevie Road, lot 58. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered the home fully engulfed in flames.

The mother and daughter who lived in the home made it out without injuries.

According to family friend Pam Miller, April Robertson and her 13-year-old daughter Shakyra Robertson were in their home asleep at the time. Miller said April Robertson heard the smoke alarms go off and went to the kitchen thinking she had left the stove on. As April Robertson was leaving the kitchen she saw smoke and flames shooting from the vents in the floor, she tried to cover the vents without success and screamed Shakyra who was asleep in her room to wake up.

Both were able to leave the home by jumping over flames coming from the vents. The family lost all their belongings in the fire including items collected for a baby girl expected in June.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. An adjacent mobile home which was unoccupied sustained heat damage when the vinyl panels began to melt.
