STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Runners in Statesboro hit the pavement to help others who have served our country.

More than 200 runners ran the first ever Patriot 5K at Georgia Southern University, benefiting the Student Veterans Association and their Wounded Eagle Fund for students who are current or former military.

"Georgia Southern has a growing military presence. It is a lot more than people would realize. In fact, roughly 8% of our student body are, or have been, military; and about 2% are those who were injured in combat," says Captain Jerome Davis of the GSU ROTC.

The Wounded Eagle Fund assists students with finances and support as they adjust to college life.
