Bus drivers rally for summer pay

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

First Student bus drivers rallied Saturday to be paid during the summer months.

About 500 first student employees are expected to lose their unemployment benefits beginning the summer of 2015, after Georgia law makers passed legislation to cut back on costs.

First Student drivers and monitors held their first meeting Saturday, discussing a contract proposal they will give to the First Student bus company.

Now that they will not be able to collect unemployment, they plan to ask First Student to compensate them during the summer months. Drivers say they are hoping First Student will be on board with this proposal, or they may have to find a new job.

"You are going to have myself, like other drivers, that are going to have go out and find other means to take care of their families, and that is disheartening and unfair, because you have drivers that have been here for years," said driver, Tawanna Hamer-Hamilton.

They plan to begin negotiating contracts with First Student in the next couple of weeks. If they do not come up with a new contract by August 31st, the drivers may strike.
