A Midway family is grieving tonight after a horrible discovery this afternoon. The body of two-year-old Taylor Michelle Berry was found this afternoon in a lake near her Liberty County home. She had been missing since Saturday.
This weekend was supposed to be perfect for Taylor's mother, Laura. She was going to see her daughter for the first time in five months. Instead, it became a nightmare.
"I didn't get to see her before she was gone," a tearful Laura said. "When I came into town, she was missing for over four hours.
Saturday afternoon, Taylor wandered from her grandparents' home. Hundreds of volunteers teamed with authorities searching the woods and water for Taylor.
Mike and Julie Porterfield helped raised Taylor as parental guardians and organized a search party Monday morning, using an underwater camera donated by Bass Pro Shops. Their search ended when Taylor's body was found in the water near Isle of Wight.
"People don't understand," said Mike. "They can say blood's thicker than water, but you don't understand."
Laura looked forward to celebrating Taylor's third birthday by her side December 28. Fate had other plans.
Taylor's family is hoping her death was accidental. An investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy will be completed within the next two days. In the meantime, the Liberty County Sheriff's Department and Taylor's family want to thank everybody who came together to help with the search.
