EVANS CO., GA (WTOC) -

A home invasion is under investigation on Bay Branch Road, near U.S. 301, south of Claxton in Evans County.

Investigators do not believe the crime was random, instead thinking the suspects that carried out this home invasion knew the occupant.

However, there are other parts of the crime that have investigators worried.

The man that lives in the house called 911 on Sunday night and said people were trying to get through his door. The suspects assaulted the man in the five minutes it took deputies to respond to the call.

Two of the suspects were still in the home when deputies arrived to the house and forced their way in. The two suspects fled out of an upstairs window. Deputies caught the third suspect that was still downstairs.

Investigators believe the men knew someone was home, but that did not stop them from committing the crime, and they worry that criminals are getting bolder.

"I think they target their folks, maybe they might know them, especially if someone's elderly or to that extent," said Evans County Sheriff Randall Tippins. "They might go in knowing the person can't really harm them."

The sheriff said the victim survived with just a trip to the emergency room. He said they haven't had this type of crime in four years, and he hopes it's even longer until the next one.
