Chef sets grilling record, raises money for charity

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

One grill was smoking on high heat in Uptown Columbus this weekend for a good cause.

A South African man grilled non-stop, donating the cooked food to a local shelter.

News Leader 9's Tesia Reed talked to the grill master today, who says he is well rested.

After 80 hours on the grill by himself chef Jan Greeff finished Sunday afternoon beating the previous record of 62 hours with very strict rules.

He could take a five minute break per hour making sure to have five different things on the grill at all times.

He was cooking burgers, South African sausage, chicken, corn, hot dogs, and donating money to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

"Portions of the food went straight to open door and Valley Rescue Mission," Greeff said. "Sometimes someone left a dollar, a couple of people left $100."

Greeff says they are still counting money raised from this weekend but he is confident they made their goal of $10,000.

Greeff grilled one thousand hot dogs, 558 hamburgers, 526 sausages, and 104 pieces of chicken.

If you would like to donate, head over to the Grillathon website.

Online donations go directly and securely to The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Greeff says thanks to Char-Broil for donating the Tru infrared grill that lasted the entire 80 hours with no problem.
