Gov. Deal signs new budget at Georgia Southern

Gov. Nathan Deal made history on several stops across Southeast Georgia on Monday, including a visit to Georgia Southern University to sign the state budget.

The governor highlighted the half a billion dollar increase for K-12 schools to eliminate furlough days and bring more money to school systems. Severe cuts began at the beginning og the economic downturn.

"We have not cut money from K-12 in recent years, but we hadn't been able to increase its money," said Deal.

State colleges and universities will see $120 million statewide. That includes an increase for HOPE scholars, employee raises and a handful of building projects like a military science building for Georgia Southern.

"We couldn't be happier with the budget and with the support the governor has given us, the buildings that we need, as well as raises that we haven't seen in the last six years," said GSU President Dr. Brooks Keel.

In Chatham County the governor signed the portion that provided the state's $35 million share in the deepening of Savannah Harbor and nearly $ million for beach erosion on Tybee.
