Investigators hope autopsy will shed light on infant's cause of death

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County deputies hope to get answers in the death of a five-month-old baby girl.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday with the GBI Crime Lab of Savannah.

Investigators say they responded to a call on Saturday afternoon about a child not breathing at a home on Appaloosa Way.

Deputies say they are treating it as suspicious like any other child death until they can rule out foul play.

"Anytime you have a five month old that obviously was found dead, obviously we are going to treat it as suspicious, like any other child death, until we can rule out any kind of foul play," said Effingham County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer David Ehsanipoor. "An autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow with the GBI Crime Lab of Savannah, and we are hoping after tomorrow, and throughout the next couple of days, we will be able to get more answers as to what exactly happened with this child."

The case is under investigation by the Effingham County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division.
