New polls show Tillis' support increasing as Election Day nears

RALEIGH, NC (WECT) – House Speaker Thom Tillis appears to be gaining momentum as the May 6 Senate primary election draws near. A new poll by Public Policy Polling shows Tillis with enough support to avoid a potential runoff for the party's nomination.

PPP surveyed nearly 700 "likely Republican voters" earlier this week, and found 46 percent supporting Tillis for the nomination, compared to 20 percent for Greg Brannon, 11 percent for Mark Harris. They are the only candidates to reach double-figures in this latest poll, although 12 percent of those surveyed did respond "undecided".

With eight candidates seeking the GOP nomination and likely showdown with incumbent Senator Kay Hagan, a candidate must secure 40 percent of the vote in the primary to avoid a runoff election, which would happen in July.

According to a PPP news release, "Tillis' overwhelming advantage on the airwaves has fueled his momentum in the stretch run of the campaign. 80 percent of likely primary voters report having seen his ads in the last few weeks, compared to only 28 percent for Brannon and 27 percent for Harris. When asked who they've seen the most ads for, 72 percent say Tillis to only 7 percent for Brannon and 6 percent for Harris."

A poll released April 24 by Survey USA and the Civitas Institute showed Tillis on the cusp of the 40 percent mark in support, gathering 39 percent compared to 20 percent for Brannon and 15 for Harris.
