Four of five school board presidential candidates to square off in debate

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Five people want to be the next Savannah Chatham County School Board President, and four of them will face off on Tuesday night in another debate. Tuesday night's debate is hosted by the Junior League of Savannah and will be held at the Coastal Georgia Center.

A lot of focus has been on who hasn't been at the prior debates. Presidential candidate David Simons said he declined to  take part in Tuesday night's debate because he already selected the forums he was going to attend.

Retired Savannah school teacher Sadie Brown, Armstrong Atlantic State University Sociology instructor Jolene Byrne, retired teacher and paster of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Chester Ellis and operations manager for Waffle House George Seaborough are all expected to participate in the debate.

Also attending tonight's debate will be a man dressed in a chicken suit, handing out flyers about Simons.

When asked last week about being called a chicken, Simons replied, "It is highly disingenuous to call anybody who served in the middle of Afghanistan, serving their country willingly, proudly, chicken. I will attend a debate of my choosing at my time."

That debate may not be tonight, but Simons said he will definitely bee at next week's debate for the PTA at the Jewish Educational Alliance, and then the following week's debate at the Pooler Chamber of Commerce.
