Beaufort mayor withdraws support for marina redevelopment proposal

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

Beaufort City Mayor Billy Keyserling is withdrawing his support for the current proposal of the marina lot redevelopment project.

Keyserling issued a statement on Tuesday saying the decision comes after weeks of listening to concerned citizens.

Historic Marina Partners, the firm hired by the city in November, envisioned a mixed use property called River Place to replace the four acre parking lot.

Keyserling said he wants to put the ball back in the public's court and hear what they think would work best within that space.

"Nobody, no mayor, no member of City Council, no Redevelopment Commission wants to shove a pill, a bitter pill down someone's mouth, no one issue is worth letting the community get at odds with each other in a hostile way and that's what it was becoming," he said.

The marina redevelopment project is part of the city's Civic Master Plan.

City Council will discuss the plan's Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at next week's special meeting.
