Driver charged in fatal hit and run

COLLINS, GA (WTOC) - Georgia State Patrol investigators charged a Richmond Hill man with DUI and leaving the scene after a deadly hit and run in Tattnall County Tuesday night. Collins Police chief Bradley Anderson told WTOC GSP charged Russell Deal in the death of Melvin Collins.

Collins was walking along Highway 292 inside the city limits just before 9pm and was found in a ditch near the intersection with Kidd Street.

Jimmie Griffin, who lives on Kidd Street, heard Collins talking on his phone when he heard a loud noise. He tried to call Collins, but got no answer. He walked up to the highway, but did not see Collins due to the dark. He and others found him moments later, but Collins was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Anderson said Collins Police had warned the victim and many others to stay on sidewalks and out of the road, especially in dark areas. Along that stretch of Highway 292, the narrow sidewalk adjoins the road with no curb or grass buffer.

Anderson said, no matter where Collins was walking Tuesday night, the driver who struck him in the dark should have stopped to determine who or what he'd struck and call for help.
