State Superintendent working with McIntosh County investigators

Education officials confirm State Superintendent John Barge is working with investigators in McIntosh County where the superintendent, assistant superintendent and the McIntosh County Academy principal are charged with failure to report child abuse.

The state superintendent's office said they have already offered to help law enforcement officials as they continue to investigate. They also want to assure the people in McIntosh County that they are aware of the situation.

A lot people are concerned since the school board did not suspend Superintendent Tina Kirby, Assistant Superintendent Larry Day and M.C.A. Principal Terrance Haywood.

They are charged with failing to report child abuse after a high school teacher is accused of having sex with at least two students on and off campus.

Investigators believe the three administrators knew about it and tried to cover it up.

Officials from the state superintendent's office sent WTOC their policy for suspending a county superintendent.

The State School Superintendent shall carry out and enforce all the rules and regulations of the State Board of Education and the laws governing the schools receiving state aid; he shall from time to time make such recommendations to the state board as may affect the welfare and efficiency of the public schools. He shall have authority to suspend a county school superintendent for incompetency, willful neglect of duty, misconduct, immorality, or the commission of any crime involving moral turpitude, provided that all of his acts in this matter shall be subject to the approval of the state board and the party so suspended may appeal his case to the state board, whose decision shall be final.

We do not know if Superintendent Barge plans to suspend Superintendent Kirby or take action on any of the other administrators.
