SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Dept.'s Patrol School Class 272 and Class 273 participated in a Run to Remember on Thursday.

Members of the SCMPD, SWAT, the Georgia Public Safety Training Center Academy and Hunter Army Airfield Rangers participated in the run.

The group stepped off at 10 a.m. and ran north on Chatham Parkway to the former Chatham County Police Dept., which is currently the SCMPD West Chatham Precinct, on Police Memorial Drive.

"It's important for them to understand the ultimate sacrifices that officers and the ones who come before them have paid in this great profession of law enforcement," said Gary Taylor, director of training.

Each SCMPD recruiting class honors a law enforcement officer from Savannah and Chatham County who was killed in the line of duty.

After the run, Chief Julie Tolbert, her command staff and the runners honored fallen 25-year-old Chatham County Police Officer Harry Akins.

Akins was fatally shot on Nov. 21, 1962 while investigating a domestic dispute after serving one year with the CCPD.

Akins' sister Helen Lowe, his niece, great niece and great-great niece attended the memorial service on Thursday.

The 20 SCMPD recruits will graduate on Friday from Patrol School. David Bates, Ryan Chaffin, Antwan Diggs, Matthew Good, Kevin Hall, Marcus Henderson, James Hood, Michael Hughes, Rico Jordan, Sharif Lockett, Keri McNaughton, Vincent Miller, Santiago Montoya, DeVaughn Powell, Christopher Sheldon, Brandon Thomas, II, Hai Tu, Jon Wallin, Ronald Weeks and Michael Zeidler will be sworn in at 10 a.m. at the Savannah Civic Center.
