Neighbors Meet to Discuss Union Mission Project

A new place to live is being met with some resistance on Savannah's south side. The Union Mission has some big plans for property on Middleground Road, but people who live in the area are not happy about who could be moving in.

That's why last night Colonial Village homeowners held a neighborhood watch meeting to discuss their future neighbors. The Union Mission has purchased 30 apartments that it plans to renovate for low-income families trying to get a second chance at life.

"I think any time people hear Union Mission is moving into a neighborhood, they think their worst fears--a homeless shelter or halfway house--is moving in," said Union Mission's Rev. Micheal Elliott. "I'm here to explain that's not the case."

The president of Union Mission says neighbors have nothing to worry about because tenants will go through a strict screening process and the area will be closely monitored.
