SCMPD LOOP program relaunching

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Police Dept.'s Latino Officer Outreach Program will be re-launching during the 2014 Cinco De Mayo Festival, which will be Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. at Lake Mayer Park on Montgomery Cross Road.

The festival is a collaboration between community outreach organizations, including the Latino Coalition of Savannah and Youth for a Cleaner Environment.

The festival will feature an hour-long presentation of SCMPD's K-9, Mounted Patrol and motorcycle units and will begin at 3 p.m.

LOOP representatives will participate in a public safety panel from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The festival also includes music, dancing and games and is free to the public.

LOOP was created because of a growing need for Spanish speaking Metro officers. While providing translation, LOOP members also observed barriers in cultural understanding between the Hispanic communities and public safety officials, and they seek to remove those barriers.

LOOP currently has 6 members assigned to various units and shifts within the SCMPD.
