DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A Decatur police officer was recognized on Friday for saving a child from a burning house.

Senator Arthur Orr and Representative Terri Collins presented Officer Zachary Blanton with a House Resolution commending him for his bravery and a State of Alabama flag at 2 p.m.

The incident happened in June 2013. According to Decatur police, Ofc. Blanton was originally sent to the address due to a possible domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, the officer said the house was on fire and the woman who lived there and one of her children were in the yard. Police said the woman was screaming about another child in the house and tried to go back inside.

Authorities said Ofc. Blanton stopped the mother, went in himself, found the child and carried him to safety. Police said the woman yelled that her "baby" was still inside, and the officer ran back inside and found the family's puppy in a bedroom.

Police said Ofc. Blanton carried the puppy outside and confirmed it was the "baby."

Ofc. Blanton also received the Decatur Police Department's Medal of Merit earlier this year.
