Gunman barricaded in Knoxville home taken into custody; I-40W reopened

KNOXVILLE, TN (WBIR) -

Knoxville Police Department says a standoff with an armed gunman in an East Knoxville neighborhood is over.

Authorities said they took the man into custody around 7:17 p.m. Saturday. Officers believed he was also the man who fired shots on I-40 Saturday morning.

The man then barricaded himself inside a home, made up of a number of apartments, on Wheeler Street for several hours.

KPD said a woman had been in a basement apartment, but they were able to get her out around 3 p.m. Saturday.

The man's name has yet to be released.

Authorities also reopened the westbound lanes of I-40 shortly after the man was taken into custody.

Neighbors said officers were in the area around 7:30 a.m. when shots were fired. Earlier in the morning, James Henley, a 20-year resident, said someone shot out the back window of his car and put bullet holes in the house next door.

KPD said there is a good chance the two incidents are connected.
