COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Hundreds turned out Saturday, May 3, to get down and dirty in the Highland Mud Run.

The race started around 8 a.m., and took racers through 18 obstacles including a huge mud pit, a barbed wire crawl, and an 80 ft. water slide.

The 5K attracts runners from all over Columbus, South Georgia, and Alabama.

One man who took part in race has been paralyzed for 20 years, but says he does not let that stop him.

"For us as a family, we do these things together, and we show everybody you can do anything in your chair," says Michael Mills. "If you're overweight or in perfect shape, this is a prime example to go out and have fun. So we're a family. We're all dirt bags, and we have a ball."

The fun was not just for the adults. There was also a course for the kids.

Proceeds from the Highland Mud Run go to benefit outreach missions, and to help children in Georgia with serious illnesses and disabilities.
