Beaufort City Council votes to terminate development deal with Historic Marina Partners

The people have spoken, and city leaders are taking their advice.

The Beaufort City Council voted on Tuesday night to unanimously terminate the development agreement with Historic Marina Partners.

The city hired the firm in November to spearhead the Downtown Marina Redevelopment project, but in the last few weeks, the public has continued to oppose their vision of creating a mixed use property known as River Place.

"First, it's good to win, but it's more than that," said David Taub with the Civic Green movement. "I praise the council for having listened to the community. There was a huge uproar, and we're just please as we can be that River Place is dead and deeply buried."

"I'm not disappointed because I realize that the civic master plan that we've been working on, in it there's not one silver bullet, so the marina parking lot, if it doesn't turn out as the civic master plan wanted it to be, then it will change to something else in time," said Beaufort City Mayor Billy Keyserling.

For now, the Downtown Marina parking lot will remain as it is, but the city is urging people to stay engaged and offer suggestions on what they think would work best.
