Industry leaders train in oil cleanup exercise

Posted: Updated:

Every day barges carrying oil and other petroleum products travel up and down the Savannah River.

But what if there was a spill? Industry leaders are training on Hutchinson Island for just such an emergency.

Industry leaders are simulating an oil spill on the river. The "oil" they're cleaning up is really dog food. They'll round it up using boats, drones and remote controlled submarines.

The whole time, a balloon is capturing video of the process and feeding it back to a big screen.

The demonstration is to show industry leaders how to communicate better in the event of a spill.

"You've got different companies. You've got different technologies. so we've brought in some of the smarter guys available, and they've shown other people how to integrate all that so it's seamless," said Glenn Degnitz, of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior.
