JASPER CO., SC (WTOC) -

Jasper County Sheriff's Deputies are searching for the people who stole five AC units from Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Center on Bees Creek Road.

Some of the residents who live near the center said this is generally a quiet place to live and they're shocked that someone would steal from a church.

"It's a holy place and I wouldn't understand why someone would want to steal five AC units and where would they put them," neighbor Tiara Nelson said.

Nelson and her neighbor, Brenda Patterson, said they enjoy living in this part of town.

"Nothing drastic happens, neighbors know each other, we sort of watch out for each other so it's a nice place to be," Patterson said.

But sometime in the last week, it didn't occur to neighbors to watch out for the Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Center when someone decided to steal their AC units.

The sheriff's office said the church moderator discovered the missing items and notified them.

Patterson's said she is not necessarily surprised by the crime.

"A thief doesn't care where he goes…because most of the time, it's unmanned, nobody's there so it's really easy assets," she said.

But others are puzzled by it.

"Very shocked…who would want to steal from a church," Paula Ford said.

Police have asked if you have any information about this case to contact the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.
