Crews begin tearing down Harbour Town clubhouse

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

A piece of Harbour Town's history is coming down on Friday.

On Hilton Head Island, crews are tearing down the Harbour Town Golf Link's clubhouse, which has been around since the 1960s, to make way for a new, bigger and better club house.

"My father actually brought me here in the early 70s," said John Cottis with Choate Construction.

Cottis is a golf fan, and he's been coming to the Heritage golf tournament for decades. Now it's his job to wipe out the old and make way for the new.

"It's a complex project, but that's what Choate cuts its teeth on," said Cottis. "We like speed. We're built for speed."

Now the race is on to get the old clubhouse down and a new one up by the time the 2015 Heritage rolls around next April.

"We perform better under stress," said Cottis.

The new clubhouse will be 26,000 square feet, with a 2,000 square foot indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar, a new banquet room, an expanded pro shop and a locker room triple the size of the one in this old clubhouse.

They aren't taking a wrecking ball to the building though. It turns out, this demolition is more like peeling an onion, careful not to hit the conference center next door.

"We're basically pulling off what we would call an exterior skin," said Cottis.

Crews are scheduled to have the building torn down to its foundation in a week and a half.

"From there, it's full bore, all the way till the end," said Cottis.
