May is national electrical safety month

May is National Electrical Safety Month and experts want to remind you to protect your home.

According to statistics, in homes they account for more than 50,000 fires each year. They cost $1.3 billion in property damage and are also blamed for nearly 500 deaths and more than 1,400 injuries.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, one of the major causes of these kinds of fires is from arc-faults. This happens when electricity flows over an unintended path.

These arcs can reach temperatures of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Damaged wires, loose electrical connections or worn insulation are usually to blame. These kinds of fires often begin behind a home's walls, which can make them difficult to detect without AFCI protection.

Experts recommend installing an arc-fault circuit interrupter when replacing home electrical outlets to help prevent electrical fires, especially in older homes.
