SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Friends and family of avid cyclist Phil Vanderburgh gathered on Monday night to remember his life.

Vanderburgh, 53, was training this past Thursday morning for a triathlon when he ran into a parked excavator along the route. He later died from his injuries at Memorial Health.

People gathered to celebrate his life and the amazing impact he had on so many people.

"It's pretty touching," said organizer Jackson Evans. "Phil had an infectious smile and a lot of really great energy. There wasn't anyone that didn't like being around him, so it means a lot to see this many people rallying around him, but it's also not a big surprise.

Vanderburgh was also honored on Sunday at the Ride on Ryan Triathlon, the race he was training for to honor his friend who died a year ago.
